Robyn Squires

Robyn Squires is the founder and creative director of Sqrypt Atelier and RYSQ Design Collective. She is the curator for the sculpture garden experience at her studio in Ellenville, called Inn Way Art Co-op & Wellbeing. Anchored in Liberty Square at the center of the village on the property of the former Way Side Inn she successfully brought together two dozen artists to collaborate at various scales to build ideas in various mediums in its inaugural year.

Box 18 has been on her vision board to scale for the last decade and with an acre backyard available, she finally had the space and means to do it on a shoe string budget. She recruited Kunihiro Ikezawa, a master Japanese carpenter based in Naoshima as the inaugural artist in residence for the season to lead the build for the Boxes in collaboration with a local union carpenter, Jill. Within 5 days the boxes were built with American tools for the Outdoor Boxes.

The Initial Model concept was fabricated in steel with all modules the same size.

For the concept to be executed efficiently it was done designed to nest together initially and be a temporary structure for a few weeks and then hibernate during off peak seasons. However it was so well received with the community that special permission was given to allow it to remain and continue the experiment through the seasons to see how the materials and quality of construction weathered.

Once construction was complete in Mid July the composition of the overall boxes and vision could have been the complete sculpture.

However the community got so inspired to do interventions within the boxes and contribute further so the experience continued to evolve with interventions by 8 additional artists: Chad, Ingrid, Barb, Mary, Evadne, Christine, Rosa, Ben, Robyn
